Otherspace (1989) opens with the players on their way to assume control of a Rebel prison ship (which contains some NPCs from previous adventures, including one of the bounty hunters from Tatooine Manhunt). The prisoners riot, though, and, in a confusing battle, both the players and the prison ship fall through a hole in hyperspace where things are…weird. The players need to repair their ship and happen upon another…thing that is sort of like a ship, where other ships (including that fleeing prison ship) seem captured. At least there should be plenty of spare parts?
Of course, once they land and start exploring, the “ship” turns about to be sort of alarmingly organic, and populated by horrible spider-alien things called the Charon that worship a black obelisk. From here, things get very Dead Space-ish, an impressive two decades before Dead Space. All that remains at that point is an escape to Realspace.
This is a weird one, for sure. There are a couple gaps in logic that I have trouble with, foremost being why the Charon don’t attack the intruders en masse. The aliens are both creepy and silly, too, which, I dunno, that was a drawback when I was a kid, but kind of endearing now, even if I can’t shake the idea that these dorks somehow inspired the Yuuzhan Vong, which, ugh. The ship is exceedingly gross, though, and I love that. There’s a lot of original art, too, by none other than Jeff Dee. Stephen Crane made some sweet maps for the adventure as well.

Top three most upsetting things about Fallout 3 so far:
Hearing Carol refer to Gob as "Gahb" and realizing that that really is how his name is supposed to be pronounced instead of like the character from the Bible (You know, the one whose entire story is about him needlessly enduring great suffering? Quit pissing me off.)
Hearing half the NPCs in Underworld straight-up calling Charon "Sharon"
Being forced to look at all these centaurs during supermutant skirmishes (they make me SICK)

Here's my super early before everything Canto 8 bingo card
You all asked for it so I shall hand it over, keep in mind this is subject to change massively based on things like the intermissions, I want to be the first person to make a Bingo card for way in the future, call it a....long term investment Here is my super early Canto 8 Bingo card!!
Tumblr media
Okay so I kinda wanna explain the board choices for funsies!
Hong Lu is a rock-.....obviously the big theory is on here!
Mothershu crumbs-So my friends and I refer to like character moments and hints as crumbs and mothershu is what we refer to as Ryoshu being a mother or like alluding to that(like with smth like Spider Bud)
Sinclair snaps-We get another moment similar to his shut the fuck up moment in Canto 7
Freak Lu- uhm this one is more of a silly one since with the number of times that man is tied up or smth and is chill with it (What do you mean it was a unique and fun experience?!?!) my friends and I think he's into it, so we included it for fun
No romance plotline-sigh. Wishful thinking on the part of a Hong Lu yume shipper(me) one of the original novels main plotlines is a whole romance love triangle thing goin on with Baoyu. My friend an I were going back and forth on if/how they could adapt that madness so to subvert expectations,we said no romance
We go to the Land of Illusion-Look if Baoyu goes there in the original, who's to say we won't go in Limbus
Outis Family crumbs- Outis saying anything about her family or home or Penelope or any of that
Uhm the Lin Daiyu space is self-explanatory aside from the descriptors, it's more in reference to my friend's bingo card she made for Canto 7, and it had "Dulcinea is a baddie" on there so I had to carry on the joke
That Grey Bastard appears-uhm.... that's in reference to Demian. My friend group is not a fan of him (I'm literally close friends with the real reincarnation of Emil Sinclair, of course we have conflicting feelings on Demian)
Levels copy the style of chapter names- So the names of levels last canto matched up with the way chapters in Don Quixote are titled and it was the same way in Canto 5 so Amia and I thought it might carry over to Canto 8 ^^
Heathcliff crumbs-We kinda threw his one in here but y'know more Heathcliff family moments or more Heathcath
Baoyu name reveal-Okay before you say, "But Sloth, they did reveal it to the sinners!" uhm no, look at who was in that convo. It was Wei, Xichun and Hong Lu, the other sinners do not know, or they just really decided to not comment on that
Chapter with the most npcs-This one is a prediction because guys. The original novel has like 400 characters in it.
Story Dungeon in Canto-So I always like to ask whether we'll get one since in Canto 6,we didn't get a dungeon,so we put it on there
Hong Lu is a "Charon situation"- I proposed some kind of crazy idea that Hong Lu was like overwriting Baoyu's personality/old self or smth and Amia responds with "Charon situation" since in Leviathan Lapis gets herself overwritten by one of her mirror worlds, that being Charon. So maybe something of a similar nature happened to Hong Lu (Yes this is different enough from rock theory to me)
Hong Lu doesn't distort- Ha you thought! Amia and I are like *convinced* the Hell's Chicken line is a red herring meant to throw us off. Like Quixote distortion was a big theory for a while and she didn't distort (Can bloodfiends distort? Idk) I know we're in the minority but like unless something changes my mind, I'm gonna keep being in the minority

Hi, Puff! I got a question about Lore Rekindled. I think you said that the titan we see during the night, when Perse went on the roof to talk to Hades(?), was Selene? I was just wondering why you chose a colour that was more purple for her skin and the literal night sky for her hair? 🤔 y'know, instead of all silver like how Helios is all gold? I think she looks cool but the colours make me think of Nyx instead of Selene. Or was it because it was a new moon night so you technically can't see the moon even though it's actually there?
Good luck on the next episode! I can't wait to read it! 😄
Ah, good question! So when designing Selene, I wanted her to actually resemble the moon in some way, more so than how she was tackled in LO. Her hair blending into the night sky is meant to give off the same impression of the darkness covering the moon, causing the different phases of the moon - sometimes her form is half-concealed, sometimes she's fully exposed, etc.
I wasn't really expecting people to confuse her with Nyx (though I don't blame anyone for that) as Nyx has a much more regular role in LO than Selene (though not by much lmao) and a far more unique design which I'm planning on retaining if/when she appears in the comic. Though I will be making some changes to Nyx's design and concept as well for the sake of the worldbuilding, but you'll have to wait and see what I do with her in that regard ;3
To me, when I picture the moon in the magical, ethereal, larger-than-life sense that I would picture Helios within the design context of LO, I wanted her to be more than just a silver Persephone-looking goddess riding around on a horse (and the reality is that Selene was barely in the comic when she first made her appear in LR, like prior to the finale when she was suddenly dropped into the comic as a real character she was just sort of this background NPC with a single cameo appearance, much like Charon).
So I ultimately went with more of a shimmering mixed blue palette, which is complementary to Helios' golden color schemes, and implemented her more into the sky as an actual force of nature much like how Helios is the sun. This was sort of the compromise that I came to between designing a more myth accurate Selene vs. designing a Selene that would fit in better with the world of LO. In this case, like Helios, she's not riding around in a chariot, but is the moon itself who comes out after Nyx has brought about the night.
I hope that answers your question! <3 And definitely hang tight for that Nyx design in the future ;3

something this image makes me think of is that a lot of people say that Fallout 4's style of companion/NPC writing is superior to how Fallout 3 does it simply because there comes a point with basically any major character where your affinity is high enough that they just... infodump their lore on you? like, if you do enough things they approve of, they grab your arm and go 'well when i was born--' and you learn a ton about them. then you do their quest, learn even MORE, and then the arc ends there.
the thing is i actually............... like how Fallout 3 makes it that characters don't tell you much, if anything at all?
just to clarify: there's nothing wrong with how fallout 4 does companions and romances or anything, nor am i implying fallout 4 would be better without them; i enjoy the quests and i like that these characters do all their their own personal Driving Factors in their lives, but there's also something to be said for characters written who don't tell you jackshit. fallout 3 doesn't NEED all these characters--clover and charon and jericho and RL-3 and so on--to tell you their backstories because for EVERY SINGLE COMPANION (with the exception of butch who you already knew the backstory of because you literally grew up together) IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.
cross is there because of her duty to your father now passed onto you. you hold charon's contract. you also hold clover's. rl-3 is a robot who follows you because That's His Job. fawkes is kind of blinded by his belief in your destiny. need i talk about jericho. the only two you could maybe say are your friends in any fashion is dogmeat (a dog) and butch (again. you grew up with him).
none of these motherfuckers are canonically going to tell you shit about their lives, and why would they? they are there to perform a duty, or for their own ends, or because they have no choice. so i get it! there won't be an infodump! there will not be an affinity moment! they don't care! all they care about is that you tell them to shoot the right people!
and you know who else isn't your friend? you know who tells you that? straight up tell you that? HEY IS THAT SARAH LYONS--
these characters have lives of their own, doing their own thing, and you--19 year old child that you are--are such a small component of it that of COURSE nobody tells you anything. sarah doesn't tell you shit. charon doesn't tell you shit. NOBODY does, and nobody will, because you are temporary. you have hired them, or bought them, or offered something in exchange for them, and at the end of the day you'll dismiss them and they'll find another employer, another owner, another something.
the companions in fallout 4, however, ARE your friends! they care about you! they follow you often because you offer something more fulfilling than money! you don't own piper any more than you can hire preston! they are invested in you, and your story, and your trials and tribulations. if that also happens to give them perks, so be it.
but in the end, if we circle back around to that picture up yonder, it begs a question: if these characters in fallout 3 are not your friends, and therefore don't tell you anything about them in any meaningful capacity... then why the fuck are they so popular amongst their fans?
like, charon is a character i see such an INSANE amount of fic and art of, right? if you've ever looked in the fallout 3 tag he's just There, Always. but charon doesn't tell you fuckall about who he is or how he got there or his past or ANYTHING. he follows you because you bought the contract, and ultimately--as i said--he's not gonna tell this random 19 year old kid about his entire life when, in the end, he's performing a service and his duties end there. yet people LOVE HIM. they ADORE him. the fics are MILES LONG and the art is MANY. why? the game sure doesn't tell you anything.
because finding a character compelling isn't about what is physically written in the game. i find sarah compelling not because she would have told me her life story in a different game--i find her compelling because of all the little clues left behind. i look at her: her rank of sentinel, her status as the elder's daughter, as a 26 year old field commander, as a soldier, as a friend, as a comrade, and i see all of them weave together in such interesting ways i can't HELP but want to dig in more. this is what people do for charon, too! for clover and jericho and cross! they look into all that negative space and see the shapes of implications of ideas and go 'i want to think about that'.
i'm not trying to say the person who made that image/mod (as apparently it IS a mod) lacks imagination. what i am trying to say is that i feel like people are asking for characters to have reams upon reams of lore before they find them 'well written', and lack the ability to take all the little bits and pieces and put them together themselves. don't you enjoy a puzzle? don't you enjoy the sandbox nature of creating?
anyway, long story short is that. idk. more rpgs need characters who shut up and don't say fuckall. trust me, i can figure them out. it just takes a little more time.

Excerpt:
Leaning out into the hall, Rook signaled for Varric, Harding, and Howe to join him.  Keeping his voice a soft hiss, he pointed in the direction of the guard station and said, “Varric, keep watch for us.”  To Howe and Harding, he added with a nod to the two doors across the hall, “See what you can do about those two.  I’ve got this one.” Rook returned his attention to the door in front of him.  Inserting the tip of his blade into the locking mechanism, he gently attempted to force the lock open.  As he did so, another memory returned... Matteo and Giacomo laughing – far too amused for such a serious situation.  Nestore crouched in front of the three of them, his lockpicks moving in an intricate dance.  Rook captivated and watching in fascination despite the manacles around his wrists.  Click.  Click.  Click.  Just like that, Nestore had them free to move once again.  As they snuck out of the cell, Rook swore he was going to have the rogue teach him how to do that just in case... “You sure about that?” The hint of sarcasm in the woman’s voice pulled Rook back to the present and with a start, he caught the lingering ring of metal breaking and noticed that the tip of his blade had sheared off in the lock.  Damn.  Well, he’d never quite gotten the hang of Nestore’s method anyway.  Time for plan B...

I am so excited to share my DABB for this year! Clipped Wings, Faded Dreams is the Shadow Dragon background Rook story for Nicias Mercar from my Paulo Draco series! While it is from Dragon Age: the Veilguard, there are only very minor spoilers (mostly characters) to the game.
HUGE shout out to dazenguile (aka: himbopunk on tumblr and blue sky) for the fabulous art for the story! It's gorgeous (I can't stop looking at it!) and is such a perfect accompaniment to the scene! Thank you so much!!! I'm so glad we got to work together on this story!
Also HUGE shout outs to @happychica and @shadoedseptmbr for being my betas again! Thank you so much, my friends! I appreciate the second and third sets of eyes on this piece as well as the suggestions along the way! You truly make me a better writer!
If you like this story, you can find others in the Paulo Draco series on AO3 under my name there, ladyamesindy.
Enjoy!!!

this post is divided into two parts:
here’s a useless thing i found
even more useless things i found
Part 1.
For no reason at all, i felt very compelled to look into Lumo NPCs and realised the funniest thing.
For years, Gabriel’s ever-suffering helper Yeanu was the realest guy in all of Lumopolis for me. I thought he could even become playable one day because Gabriel talks about him so much and he sounded so funny.
Gabriel’s Story 2 (EN): My direct subordinate, Yeanu, who joined the Guardians later, is like a plant that has withered at a young age, a wastepaper basket with a hole in the bottom, or a little donkey that has never stopped working since it was born—he didn't have a single trace of vitality.
I’m in tears from that description, why’d she do him like that. But what kind of name is Yeanu, how do you spell that?
(Google: The young man who later joined the Guard, my direct subordinate who was needed to help me with my work, was like a plant that withered at a young age, like a wastebasket with a hole at the bottom, like a little donkey that had been working non-stop since birth, without a trace of life.)
(Google: That boy, who joined the Guard later, that is to say, my direct subordinate who served as my administrative assistant, looked utterly lifeless every day, like a plant that withered at a young age, or a garbage can with a hole in the bottom, or perhaps a donkey that has been working nonstop since it was born.)
Did… did the English version straight-up invent a name for him, unprompted??
Part 2.
I don’t speak Chinese and i don’t have the Chinese version of the game. Please imagine how hard it was for me to find Gabriel’s files.
The site i ended up finding it on is called wiki.biligame, which is some sort of wiki project run by bilibili, i assume? The site is evidently made with the CN server in mind, as it’s not up to date with Global characters and features censored artworks (did you know Schwartz’ outfits are censored?). I’m not sure how reliable it is because it seems legit but… it lists all the characters ages?
As far as i know, no other versions listed the ages directly in character files, you had to either pray the character gets a special feature like Jane’s Notes or calculate it yourself. We (i?) don’t know how old most of our characters are but this site somehow got them all. Except for Istvan. Is it the official info that only the CN server got for some reason? Or did someone just have a lot of free time on their hands?
For example, we got the Angels’ ages in promotional/concept art, yet Uriel’s age was explicitly listed as ??? in both the promos and Jane’s Notes. This wiki has it as 14 y/o physically and 26 factually, which sounds plausible but where could that possibly come from?
Mia’s age is almost impossibly on point. She was 13 at the time of the Kartima rebellion 12 years ago, so she is indeed 25 now but we only learn that from a single line in Ode to Lumopolis, which the CN server hadn’t gotten to yet when the page was created.
Gronru’s age is listed as 15 physically and 111+ factually, which would explain a lot but like…. how could i miss her being over a century old? Is she?
Meanwhile some of the characters who we know have abnormal ages don’t have their factual ages listed. Especially glaring when Eve’s age is split but not Dawn’s (only physical is shown) or Mia’s (only factual), even though it adds up.
The factual ages for Charon (101) and Victoria (143) would’ve been proven incorrect in Through Rifts We Wander, which the CN server never got, but it’s worth noting Charon wasn’t confirmed to be a vampire until that event. Like how do you spoil something wrong.
Azure being 28 sounds like a mistake because my impression was she’s older than Sinsa (31) but then again, we didn’t have her age stated directly anywhere.
Similarly, i’m not entirely convinced that Schwartz is 55 either. It really feels like it should be 45-50 (don’t make me show you the math…) but you know i’m biased (i did the math…).
Paloma’s age being listed as 23 when she’s 24 in Jane’s Notes is like the only undeniable mistake as far as i noticed.
No. 33’s age is listed as 0, and Istvan’s age isn’t given at all, those are just odd, like alright then keep you secrets.
So i’m taking those with a grain of salt, but why would anyone even bother to make all this up? What is the LORE here

A missed potential in Hades (the game)
Ok, listen. I'm a fan of Supergiant Game's Hades (haven't played Hades II yet. Because my PC is a potato and I hope the full version will be in PS4). Yes there are bothersome inaccuracies, but...
The characters are fun, the game is surprisingly not repetitive yet consistent, the mechanics are cool, Hades and Persephone are actually compelling (a miracle in mythology retellings). And Hypnos is a fun lil goober.
But I feel like there was one huge missed potential. No, I'm not complaining about Dionysus for the 100th time or OdyPen being tossed in the trash in Hades II (gosh I hope it's a fake out and they're still together 🙏🙏🙏).
I'm talking about this guy :
Tumblr media
This is Asterius, better known as the Minotaur. Yes it's the third time I talk about him today, but I just had an idea for him that I want to share.
I actually like what Hades did with him ! Again, I have more positive thoughts about this game than negative.
I'd even go as far as to say this is the best version of Asterius I've seen, imo.
He's an actual character, capable of speech. He's not always seen as Theseus' sidekick, even having his own moments with Zagreus. He's the more intelligent one, he's more human than Theseus and I love that about him. Like Achilles, but to a much higher degree, he mellowed down in the afterlife and lost his murderous rage.
The ironic friendship with his murderer is also very cool.
But we could've done so much more with this wonderful concept. Hades is essentially a game about mending broken relationships: Persephone and her family, Orpheus and Eurydice, Achilles and Patroclus, Thanatos and Hypnos... but Theseus and Asterius never really contributed to the main plot. They're just kinda there, doing their own thing.
I think adding ONE element would change everything, an important part of the Underworld (so Zagreus can interact with it) and something interesting for both Theseus and Asterius : the three judges. More specifically Minos.
A plotline where Minos and Asterius' abusive relationship will be discussed and Theseus actually being a good person for once and standing up for his friend.
Maybe with Minos apologizing and seeing that Asterius isn't a monster. And Zagreus being the catalyst for fixing the relationship, because in all those encounters, he learned to know who Asterius is.
Bonus point if Ariadne and/or Phaedra are mentioned. I see the latter appearing. Heck, maybe the former in a "Dionysus wants to resurrect her" storyline.
But this post is about Asterius and Minos. Between the underworld themes, the broken family of Crete, Asterius' humanity, Theseus humbling himself, it'd have been integrated so seamlessly !!
Just by adding a room for the three judges, with whom Zag regularly interacts, or fights as bosses, or just NPCs like Charon/Chaos with unique gimmicks.
Maybe fun interactions with Radamanthus and Aeacus too, though I have less ideas for them.
Please tell me there's a fanfic out there exploring that ! Or that Hades II will somehow do it 🙏.
